Today, I’m going to ruffle some feathers because I’m about to talk about one of the most overrated trends in the fitness community: fasted cardio.

And yes, I know there will be some tough comments below, but hear me out.

What Is the Main Claim of Fasted Cardio?

Proponents of fasted cardio say that exercising on an empty stomach burns more fat because, with no food in your system, your body is supposedly forced to tap into your fat stores. The idea is that lower blood sugar levels in a fasted state mean more fat burning.

The Reality Check: Is It True?

Here’s the truth: there’s always blood sugar in your body, even when you haven’t eaten. So, the idea that you have no blood sugar during fasted training is a myth. The less blood sugar, the more your body is forced to burn fat—but that is only part of the story.

The Bigger Picture: Calories Are King

The real factor that influences weight loss is caloric balance—calories in versus calories out. Whether you do fasted cardio or fed cardio, it ultimately doesn’t make a difference in the long run.

What Happens After Fasted Cardio?

Let’s say you go for a run in the morning and burn fat because you had nothing in your stomach. You then come home and drink a healthy shake or meal. What does your body do with those calories?

It notices that you’ve burned a lot of fat and goes into resource preservation mode. It may store some of those calories as fat because it perceives your resources are low, essentially canceling out your fat-burning efforts.

The Bottom Line: Is Fasted Cardio Effective?

In short: no, fasted cardio is not superior for weight loss. It might have some other benefits, but when it comes to burning fat, the science simply doesn’t support it as a better method.

So, if you’re looking for real results and an effective way to get in shape, focus on calorie control, consistent training, and a balanced diet.
